Fertility Screening for Men

Male fertility screening is fairly straight forward. The first step requires semen analysis. This looks at the quality, number and movement of the sperm and if all this is normal then no further testing is really necessary.

The whole process requires the patient to abstain from sex/masturbation for at least 3 days. Then a sample needs to be collected into a sterile pot (provided during consultation at clinic the first time) and taken immediately to the laboratory on the request form. This is because the sperm has a life span of only 60-90 minutes. Once delivered to the lab the results will be ready in 2-3 days.

Should there be an abnormality on the semen analysis, the next step is to go for a scrotal ultrasound that will identify and physical abnormalities with the testicles. Should this be normal then further testing, including genetic testing, may be necessary.

Fertility supplements and medication are also available and more information can be found here.
