HIV is a worrying disease for many. Protection should always be used to minimise transmission of infections, particularly HIV. But is there anything else that can be done in case protection fails or is not necessarily an option?

This is where pre exposure prophylaxis or PrEP for HIV is very effective. Taken once a day for as long as you need, the medication acts as a safety net to reduce HIV transmission. Although it is very effective it doesn’t replace condoms, it just adds that second layer of defence.

PrEP has been used often by two groups of people: those with active sex lives involving casual partners or those in long term partnerships with someone who already has HIV. PrEP is a good option for those who fall into these categories.
