How is it defined?

Premature ejaculation is defined as ejaculation occurring within moments of penetration (usually less than 1 minute) and is uncontrollable.

This can result in significant psychological stress for both partners as they may feel to blame.

It is important to separate PE from erectile dysfunction as the latter can often present in a similar manner.

What causes it?

In all honesty there is no known cause. Most likely stress and anxiety play a role but there is no definite cause.

What can be done?

Simple non-medical methods are available such as applying anaesthetic creams to the penis before sex or even using condoms with a small amount of anaesthetic within. But often these have a limited effect and the former can reduce enjoyment of sex for the receptive partner.

There is only one approved medical treatment available. This medicine is actually based on an anti-depressant but when used at significantly lower doses it was found to improve PE by as much as 100%. It is taken 30 minutes before sexual intercourse and works by reducing autonomic impulses that result in ejaculation. You will still experience the sensation of sex as normal.

The aim is to increase penetration to ejaculation time to approximately 4-5 minutes, which is considered the normal range. This may seem a short time but anything more than 5 minutes is not considered the normal range.
