4th generation HIV tests or combo/duo tests can be performed as either rapid finger-prick tests or slower lab tests. Both are considered equally accurate when performed at the right time.
Both tests are accurate for a window period greater than 28 days.
The advantage of a 4th gen test is that it looks for both the p24 antigen (which appears on the virus itself and peaks at 4 weeks from exposure) as well as the HIV antibody (which is the body’s immune response to HIV). Therefore the test is accurate from 28 days where it will detect the p24 antigen to beyond 3 months where the antibody is detectable.
