Where You can get tested for chlamydia in Singapore

Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Singapore, and it's important to understand the risks associated with contracting it. If left untreated, Chlamydia can have long-term consequences which include pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and ectopic pregnancy.

What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is caused by a bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis, which can be passed between partners during sexual activity. This includes vaginal, anal or oral sex. It is thus important for people who are sexually active to get tested regularly for STDs, particularly those who have new or multiple partners.

How Does Chlamydia Testing Work?

There are several different types of tests available for chlamydia testing in Singapore. The most common type of test is a vaginal swab (for non-pregnant women) or urine test (for men or pregnant women), which can detect the presence of the bacteria responsible for chlamydia infection. Urine tests involve passing urine into a sample cup which is then sent to a laboratory for testing. Swabs involve taking a sample from the cervix or upper vagina, or throat with a small swab. Penile urethral swabs are rarely performed now due to being superseded by urine tests. This is then sent to the lab to be tested. In some cases, blood tests may also be used as part of chlamydia testing but this is rarely done now. Chlamydia testing is recommended for those who are sexually active and have had unprotected sexual intercourse in the past six months.

What are Common Symptoms of Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is often referred to as a “silent” infection, which means that many people may not experience any symptoms. For those that do, the symptoms include:

  • a burning sensation when passing urine.
  • unusual discharge from the vagina or penis
  • pain during sexual intercourse
  • pain in the lower abdomen

It’s important to note that some people do not experience any visible signs or symptoms of chlamydia so regular STD testing and screening is important, even if you don’t have any of the above signs or symptoms. It is also important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by other conditions and may not necessarily indicate the presence of chlamydia.

What are the Risks Associated with Chlamydia?

If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to more serious health complications. For women, this includes pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and ectopic pregnancy. For men, it can lead to inflammation of the testicles or prostate gland. It is also possible for chlamydia to spread to other parts of the body, such as the eyes and throat.

When Should You Get Tested for Chlamydia?

It is important to get tested regularly for STDs if you are sexually active. Tests should be done at least once a year, or more frequently if you have multiple partners or new partners. If you are pregnant, it is especially important to get tested early on to ensure that you and your baby are protected from any possible complications.

Regular STD testing is also recommended for anyone who has HIV as this increases the risk of contracting other STDs such as chlamydia. Additionally, people with symptoms of an STD should visit a clinic immediately to get tested. Chlamydia testing helps identify the infection early, so treatment can be started and any potential complications can be avoided.

It’s never too late to get tested for chlamydia or other STDs so make sure you speak with a doctor as soon as possible if you think you may have been exposed. Regular STD testing and screening can help catch infections early before they cause any long-term damage. By getting tested regularly, you can reduce your risk of spreading sexually transmitted diseases.
