Mycoplasma genitalium is an increasingly common sexually transmitted disease/infection (STD/STI). It can account for approximately 10% of STD cases that do not involve Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea.
Symptoms are largely similar to other common STDs and include:
Men
- Burning sensation when passing urine
- Discharge or pus from the tip of the penis
- The need to urinate frequently
Women
- Vaginal discharge
- Spotting
- Pain during sexual intercourse
But just like the other STDs symptoms may not be present at all. However, with the other STDs the option is to screen which can even identify silent infections. The problem with Mycoplasma Genitalium is that there is no readily available lab test that can identify it.
Therefore the diagnosis is often one of exclusion (where we have ruled out all other infections first).
However, if Mycoplasma Genitalium is suspected then treatment can be administered easily and is usually fully effective.
