Mycoplasma and ureaplasma

Mycoplasma and ureaplasma arise from the same family of bacteria. The two found most commonly in the genital region are Mycoplasma Hominis and Ureaplasma Urealyticum.

Both can be found in normal healthy individuals but they can also lead to genito-urinary symptoms such as abnormal discharge for women and burning during urination for men.

Direct testing (vaginal swabs for women and urine testing for men) is the best way to identify if they are present. Treatment is given if symptoms are present but infection in the absence of symptoms may be left alone.

Treatment usually involves a course of antibiotics. The lab performing the tests often test different antibiotics against the bacteria so see which they are sensitive to. This enable us to use the correct antibiotic the first time around.
