What are STDs?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are infections that are primarily spread through sexual contact including vaginal, anal, or oral sex. The terms STD and STI are often used interchangeably, and both refer to the same group of infections.

There are many different types of STDs, ranging from bacterial infections like chlamydia and gonorrhoea, to viral infections such as herpes, HPV, and HIV. Some are easily treatable with antibiotics, while others may require longer-term management.

Why is STD testing and Screening so important?

One of the key challenges with STDs is that many of them show little to no symptoms, especially in the early stages. For example, up to 80% of women and 50% of men with chlamydia may not experience any symptoms at all. This absence of symptoms can delay diagnosis and treatment, leading to unintentional spread of the infection to others.

That’s why regular STD screening is so important. Even if you feel completely fine, testing helps detect silent infections early so they can be treated quickly and discreetly protecting both your health and your partner’s.

If you’re unsure or concerned about your risk, contact us today to book a confidential STD test at Atlas Pacific Medical.

What are the Common Sexually Transmitted Diseases?

In Singapore, the following infections are frequently diagnosed during routine STD screening, the most common STDs include:

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is one of the most common bacterial STDs, particularly among young adults. It often causes no symptoms, especially in women. When symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Painful or burning sensation during urination
  • Unusual vaginal or penile discharge
  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain

Untreated chlamydia can lead to complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, or chronic pelvic pain.

Genital Herpes (HSV)

Caused by the herpes simplex virus (usually HSV-2), genital herpes is highly contagious. It may cause:

  • Painful blisters or ulcers in the genital or anal area
  • Tingling, itching, or burning sensation before blisters appear
  • Recurrent outbreaks over time

Herpes can still be transmitted even when there are no visible sores. There is no cure, but antiviral medications can help manage symptoms and reduce the risk of transmission.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection that affects both men and women. It can infect the genitals, rectum, or throat. Symptoms may include:

  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Green or yellow vaginal or penile discharge
  • Lower abdominal pain or pelvic discomfort
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

Left untreated, gonorrhoea can lead to infertility and may increase the risk of contracting or transmitting HIV.

Syphilis

Syphilis progresses in stages and can cause a range of symptoms, depending on the stage of infection:

  • Primary stage: Painless ulcer (chancre) at the site of infection
  • Secondary stage: Skin rashes (often on the palms and soles), swollen lymph nodes, fever
  • Latent and tertiary stages: Serious complications affecting the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, and other organs if left untreated

Early detection and treatment with antibiotics are essential.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)

HIV weakens the immune system by attacking white blood cells (CD4 cells). In the early stages, it may cause flu-like symptoms or no symptoms at all. Without treatment, it can progress to AIDS. Common signs in later stages include:

  • Persistent fever
  • Weight Loss
  • Night Sweats
  • Recurrent infections

Early diagnosis and antiretroviral therapy (ART) can help people with HIV live long, healthy lives and greatly reduce the risk of transmission.

Should I take the STD test?

STDs tests, also known as STI testing, are readily accessible in Singapore at general practitioner (GP) clinics or specialised clinics that focus on men’s and women’s health. Many of these clinics offer confidential STD testing options for individuals seeking such services.

STDs can silently impact individuals without any symptoms. With possibilities of STDs, including HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, and Genital Herpes (caused by Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2), it can be uncertain if one has contracted any form of infection.

If you experience any signs or symptoms of an STD, or if you’ve recently had sexual contact with a partner/partners who have an STD, it is highly recommended that you undergo testing and screening for STDs.

Getting an STD test or screening in Singapore is highly recommended for one who have but not limited to:

What are the benefits of STD test?

In light of the growing awareness surrounding STDs, it is crucial not to shy away from STD testing. It may surprise you to know that most doctors are capable of offering non-judgmental, personalised, professional, and confidential consultations to address your concerns about STDs. Early screening and treatment of STDs not only contribute to a higher quality of life and healthier relationships but also safeguard the well-being of both you and your loved ones.

Furthermore, testing for STDs is especially important if you are planning to have a baby. Remember: many STDs can be passed through sexual contact or childbirth, so make sure to get tested if you are pregnant or trying to conceive in order to keep both yourself and your unborn child safe.

How long do STD tests take?

The time required depends on the type of test conducted. Here’s a breakdown of testing durations at our clinic:

  • Rapid STD tests (e.g., for HIV) deliver results in as little as 20 minutes.
  • Other tests, such as urine, swab, or blood tests for infections like chlamydia or gonorrhea, may take 1 to 5 working days.

Our team ensures you’re advised on the specific timeframe for your results during your visit. With Atlas Pacific Medical, you can trust us for timely and accurate STD test results in Singapore.

How long after sex to test for STD?

At Atlas Pacific Medical, determining the right time to test for STDs is crucial for ensuring accurate STD test results. The waiting period, or the “window period,” varies based on the specific infection, the type of test, and individual factors like symptoms or exposure risk. Here’s a detailed guide to help you:

Recommended Testing Windows for Common STDs

  • HIV: For accurate results, most standard HIV antibody tests require testing at least 90 days after exposure. However, advanced fourth-generation HIV tests can detect the infection earlier, as soon as 28 days after exposure. Follow-up testing may be advised if results are taken during the early stages.
  • Chlamydia and Gonorrhea: These bacterial infections can generally be detected 7 to 14 days after exposure. Testing too early may lead to false negatives, so if you’re feeling symptoms, consult with our team for guidance.
  • Syphilis: The most reliable detection period for syphilis is 3 to 6 weeks after exposure, although early-stage infections may require follow-up testing if symptoms arise later.
  • Herpes (HSV-1 & HSV-2): If you experience genital sores or other symptoms, testing immediately is recommended. For asymptomatic cases, blood tests can detect herpes antibodies approximately 4 to 6 weeks post-exposure, but waiting 12 weeks yields the most reliable results.

However, if you’re experiencing symptoms such as unusual discharge, itching, or sores, it’s essential to get tested immediately, regardless of the standard waiting periods.
